Lavender love

Tended the lavender bed that got planted last year. A few large bushes look fantastic, and an oscillating hoe made quick work of the grass that had encroached in the absence of mulch. Mulch… It’s free at a community pile, but we don’t have a pickup, a suitable trailer, or a hitch on the leased car. That hurdle is a few thou$and, but when you stack it up against $70-100 delivery fee per truckload, it gets hard to justify spending a few hundred bucks on what would be free, had we the right equipment. It’s tempting to add a wood chipper to the farm’s inventory to at least be able to plan for future years – there are plenty of fallen trees that we could chip, but that microbial bounty takes a year or so to turn chips to suitable mulch.
